Why Are GPS Watches Usually Thicker? And How We Made Ours Slimmer
GPS-equipped smartwatches have become essential for runners, cyclists, hikers, and outdoor enthusiasts.
But one common question remains:
Why are smartwatches with built-in GPS usually thicker than standard models? Can' t manufacturers simply make them thinner?
The truth is, the added thickness is not a product flaw—it is a result of the complex engineering behind precise GPS positioning.
01. GPS antennas require space — and this cannot be compromised
The GPS antenna needs enough room to ensure stable signal reception.
It must also be positioned away from metal components and interference sources.
This requires an additional internal structure layer, which naturally increases the device thickness.
02. Independent GPS chips need more room and thermal management
Unlike watches that rely on a smartphone for positioning, a GPS smartwatch must independently receive satellite signals and calculate location data.
This demands:
-
A larger chip area
-
Dedicated electromagnetic shielding
-
Additional thermal design to handle constant power consumption
All of these elements occupy valuable internal space.
03. Larger batteries are necessary to support long GPS usage
Continuous GPS tracking consumes far more power than daily smartwatch functions.
To ensure complete running or hiking routes, manufacturers need to include larger batteries — and battery thickness directly impacts the overall watch thickness.
04. Waterproof construction adds layers and complexity
Many GPS watches also feature higher waterproof ratings, requiring more sealing materials, reinforced structural layers, and internal compartments.
These features further increase the device profile.
Slimmer Innovation: Our LC211 GPS Smartwatch Measures Only 11.4mm
While it is widely accepted that GPS-enabled watches are difficult to make thin, we achieved significant optimization in the LC211 through structural redesign, antenna tuning, and battery arrangement.
As a result, the LC211 offers built-in high-precision GPS and 1ATM water resistance in a remarkably slim 11.4mm body — thinner than most GPS watches in the market.
-
Built-in High-Precision GPS: Accurate tracking without your phone
-
1ATM Water Resistance: Protection against rain and daily splashes
-
Only 11.4mm Thick: A noticeably slimmer and more comfortable wearing experience
LC211 brings users both professional outdoor performance and sleek everyday comfort — without compromise.
